Perfect for Summer, this tasting will look at some of the fantastic white wines of Italy.
We will start in the South and work our way North. First wine will be a Cataratto from Sicily, a grape native to the island and seldom found outside of southern Italy. Heading North, next wine will be a wonderfully aromatic Falanghina from Campania, from volcanic soils in Beneventano, this area around Naples provides some characterful wines (we've tasted a Fiano and a Greco in priortastings).
Skipping a whole chunk of central Italy we arrive in the North East and taste 2 expensive, 'proper' expressions of their grape varieties. Starting with a Nosiola from the hills of Trentino Alto Adige, this grape variety is seldom seen in the UK, but provides crisp dry whites with great minerality and subtle aromas/flavours of hazelnuts (grape is said to be names after 'Nocciola' - Italian for hazelnut). We finish with possibly the most expensive Pinot Grigio you will have tasted!? Livio Felluga is one of Italy's best white wine producers, this is a classy expression of what most consider to be an easy drinking/everyday type of wine. Its not bursting out of the glass with aroma or flavour - but it has elegance, balance and great intensity - a Pinot Grigio to ponder?!
