Before World War 1 the Wines of the Rheingau were the most expensive in the world! Fast forward a century and two world wars and the infamy of Black Tower, Blue Nun and Liebfraumilch did not do German wines any favours on export markets!
We will taste 3 wines from the region - from the slopes of the Rheingau and the flatter vineyards of the Rheinhessen to discover just how fine, Rhine wines can be!
- We will start with a 'Trocken' Riesling from the Rheinhessen - a brilliant example of a modern, dry style of Riesling.
- We will then compare and contrast with a classic 'Kabinett' style Riesling from Schloss Vollrads - one of the oldest Wine Estates in the world - production here started in the Thirteenth century!
- We wll finish with a fantastic multi vintage red wine - an intriguing blend of Pinot Noir and Saint Laurent - elegant and complex, an example of how good German red wine can be (which it should be at £28 a bottle!)
